Riverhead Streetscape
Location: Riverhead, NY
Client: Town of Riverhead; NYS Department of State Brownfield Opportunity Area Program
Project Type: Streetscape
Collaborators: IMEG (Cameron Engineering), DM Engineering, Gardiner & Theobald Inc, Craul Land Scientists
East Main Street is a compact stretch of Downtown Riverhead featuring retail and dining proximate to the Peconic River waterfront. LVF’s landscape design builds upon the existing character to create a vibrant public realm with cohesive materials, planting and furnishings. Enhanced pedestrian crossings and expanded sidewalks promote pedestrian safety by encouraging slower-moving traffic patterns. On-street parallel parking is reduced and shifted to a nearby garage, replaced by amenity zones where people can move and relax with comfort. All the visible improvements are complemented by infrastructural upgrades to support the seasonal events unique to Riverhead.
The project is funded by both a New York State Downtown Revitalization (NYS DRI) grant and a Federal RAISE grant. East Main Street is a New York State Route, requiring an arduous NY State DOT permitting review while navigating the stringent Buy America clause due to the federal requirements.
